The Distinguished Alumnus/a Award

Created in 1976 by University of Maryland University College, this award recognizes annually an alumnus/a who has achieved significant recognition for excellence in his/her profession or field.  The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest alumni award of University of Maryland University College, and the highest honor the Alumni Association bestows upon a member of its own community. It is intended to recognize an alumnus/a who has achieved significant recognition for excellence in his/her profession or field.

To be considered for the award, an individual must be:

  1. An alumnus/a of the university.
  2. Distinguished in his or her chosen business, profession or life's work and must have received some previous recognition from contemporaries.
  3. A person of such integrity, stature, demonstrated ability and renown that the faculty, staff, students and alumni will take pride in, and be inspired by, his or her recognition.
  4. One who has demonstrated a continuing interest in University of Maryland University College and in the Alumni Association, and have contributed time, talent, or money to one or more programs that benefit University of Maryland University College.
  5. An individual who, in deed or action, reflects and recognizes the importance of his or her education at University of Maryland University College, who demonstrates pride in his/her alma mater, and whose interest and loyalty are evident.

Selection Criteria

50% - Achievement of professional success

30% - Will bring recognition to the University or the Alumni Association

10% - Service to community and/or civic organizations

10% - Contributions to University of Maryland University College, academic college and/or
department or the Alumni Association.
