Karren Pope-Onwukwe, '93
Karren Pope-Onwukwe has an exemplary record of service and accomplishment, including balancing her professional responsibilities, raising her son as a single mother and completing her degree.
Most of Pope-Onwukwe's professional life has been spent in service to her community, specifically to the elderly. As an expert in elder law, she has helped clients plan for aging, disability and transfer of wealth, and helped shape policies and regulations related to elder care in the greater Washington, D.C. area. Pope-Onwukwe has worked tirelessly to ensure that those with skill and ambition have the opportunity to advance in their profession, regardless of race, upbringing or financial means.
For her exemplary achievements and service to UMUC and her community, UMUC is proud to name Karren Pope-Onwukwe the University of Maryland University College Distinguished Alumna of 2009.

Rosalyn Swiggett, '05
Rosalyn Swiggett is truly the backbone of the Alumni Association's Teacher Education Chapter. As the chapter's president, Swiggett created the Teacher Best Practices Sharing Forum to give Maryland educators the opportunity to discuss teaching and exchange effective classroom strategies. Swiggett has done an exemplary job of leveraging her knowledge and skills to develop a community of teaching professionals who can share best practices.
For her ongoing leadership of the Teacher Education Chapter and her significant contribution to the UMUC Alumni Association and UMUC's mission, UMUC is proud to name Rosalyn Swiggett the 2009 recipient of the Edward A. Parnell Outstanding Alumna Service Award.
